Sekera is a good player. He was arguably the team's 2nd best damn last year and still has room for improvement.
I would have preferred several other Sabres leave before him, but Reggie was in more demand and the Sabres have a lot of dmen, so he was the one to go.

You can also argue garth is the 2nd best Sabres Blogger doesnt make him a good one.
Will make camp interesting though, will have to see who fills in for Reggie as the D-man who stands still looking around like a lost puppy while his assignment scores. |

I think you will find Regier has already filled that role With the addition of Tallinder |

Were you actually watching the games? He's a borderline AHL player. Defensively he's a liability, and he has trouble clearing even the smallest forwards out from in front of the net. Hank Tallinder would be considered a physical presence when compared to Sekera. He was a turnover machine at times - and I'm not just talking last season. Offensively he was given power play opportunities (for what reason I could never understand) and more ice time than he deserved, and the result..... point totals that were abysmal. Season point totals from his time with the Sabres: 8,19,11,29,13,12. When the offensive part of your game is what you are relying on then you need to produce more than that. Mike Weber could give us those point totals, and he gets no power play time. Sekera seemed to be better at moving the puck out of the zone as last season progressed, but that took 6 years to develop. He long overstayed his welcome here. Any of the 10 d-men fighting for the 6 starting spots right now are as good or better than Sekera. Good luck Carolina. |

One thing Reggie did have, remember, was sick trade value.
Meaning, the play of Jamie McBain will most likely make us sick and therefore wish we had Reggie back. |

Been told to NOT be surprised if the Avalanche deal Paul Stastny to Buffalo for Ryan Miller. Stastny/Miller both headed to UFA in summer
An Avs newspaper reporter tweeted this after Rimer's

A Buffalo Colorado deal makes sense.
Miller and a 3rd for Statsny and a 2nd.
Both picks are conditional. If Colorado makes the playoffs or Miller resigns it becomes a 1st round pick. If Buffalo makes the playoffs or Statsny resigns it becomes a 2nd round pick.
This deal makes sense for both teams. The Avs need to fix their goalie situation. The Sabres need to move Miller. Statsny wants out. Both are UFA's to be. Colorado would try to resign Miller hard I believe. If the Sabres don't want to keep Statsny he gets moved at the deadline (which he would get a decent return). At this point just get it done |

What do they do with Varlamov and also their Defense is just as bad as Buffalos so I cant see him making any difference. If I was Colorado I would be trying to move Paul for a very good top 4 Defender or top 2 if they can pull it off. Then I think you see Varlamov look a lot better. |

Their D isn't great but its not bad. Plus their forwards are much better in the puck possession statistic. Varlamov could get sent back here if we throw in a D prospect like McNabb or even Pysk (I know im in the minority here but I'm not sold on him) |

I dont think any draft picks need to be invovled though if its straight up, and avs having 3 goalies wouldnt be ideal either, so Varly would have to be sent back.
Stastny/Varly for Miller/player x...I would love to try and acquire either a guy like Stafford or Foligno if parting with a dman like Ehroff is out of the question. And yes once we get to that sort of return for the avs, then we might have to sweeten the pot with a high draft pick |

There is no way Buffalo does Miller for Statsny straight up. The fact that Miller is still here shows that they aren't going to move him without getting the right price for him. You can have Stafford all day, Foligno is going to cost you. I'd send a dman (minus Ehrhoff and Myers) but those picks are going to need to be there (not in my eyes but in Darcy's eyes). |
